Symetri Donates Bed Race Winnings to Breast Cancer Research Charity


September 20, 2000, High Point, North Carolina. When the staff of Symetri, a Triad interactive agency plays together, they like to make it count in meaningful ways. The North Carolina Furnishings Festival offered them a number of opportunities all rolled into one event. The Festival's Tour de Sealy Bed Race was an outlet for the group's abundance of creativity and energy, while supporting their client, Sealy, Inc. as well as other home furnishings clients.

Symetri, who recently won an award for best small business work environment in the Triad, designed and built the sleek mobile bed with the "fastest" time during the Third Annual Tour de Sealy held recently in High Point. Teams of six people raced in two different heats, winning both races and netting the prize of $750.

Prior to the race, Symetri announced its charity of choice as Friends You Can Count On, a non-profit organization that funds breast cancer research at nationally known medical institutions. The mission statement of Friends You Can Count On conveys the organization's desire to honor friendships and the concern for friends with "focused efforts on awareness of the need for new and improved methods of earlier detection of breast cancer."

The group is the nation's only breast cancer charity dedicated exclusively to finding, evaluating, funding, and publicizing new projects for research in earlier breast cancer detection. Approximately 186,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year and another 1 million more women have breast cancer and don't know it yet. Current "early detection" methods cannot detect many breast cancers until they have been present in the body for 5 - 8 years.

Tina Hawkins, Executive Director of Friends You Can Count On, expressed the appreciation of the organization, "Historically, our support has been from individuals whose lives have been impacted when a mother, friend, daughter, or wife are diagnosed with breast cancer. However, recently Friends has experienced tremendous support from Greensboro and Triad area businesses. These corporate donations have allowed us to increase our support of research for earlier breast cancer detection methods. We thank Symetri for recognizing our organization and efforts with this donation."

In presenting the check to Friends You Can Count On, Sam Young, "trailblazer" for Symetri, said, "We had so much fun participating in this event. It warms our hearts to know that the outcome will benefit an organization whose goals are to ensure that others live to enjoy healthy lives."
